Unfortunately, Down syndrome (DS) is one of the leading causes of disability and is the most common genetic disorder in children worldwide. Down syndrome patients suffer from developmental disabilities. They are also susceptible to various chronic disorders, physical disabilities and infections.

"According to the World Health Organization, 1 in every 700 children born worldwide will have Down syndrome."

Apparently, Down syndrome has no name in the URDU language, meaning that most parents in Pakistan are unaware of the disease and therefore unable to seek further help, according to research, given to 0.2 children in Karachi. Was diagnosed with Down syndrome through HCG, ME and MSAFP tests.

What is Down syndrome

Down syndrome is a condition in which a child is born with an extra chromosome 21. Chromosomes contain genes that are passed from parents to their children during reproduction. Each cell basically inherits 23 chromosomes from any parent, making it a complete set of 23 pairs of chromosomes in a child. In children with Down syndrome, one of the chromosomes fails to separate properly. This causes the unborn child to be born with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two, and the child develops physical and developmental problems. A pregnant woman who is giving birth to a child with Down syndrome will not experience any signs and symptoms because it is a genetic condition and can only be seen in a child with this condition.

Listed below are common physical features that are characteristic of Down syndrome:

  • almond shaped eyes
  • Flat face (especially nose)
  • Short head and short neck
  • Protruding tongue
  • small ears
  • short stature
  • developmental delays
  • Small arms and legs
  • Loose joints

Children with Down syndrome grow slower than other children. Children with Down syndrome also experience difficulty in brain development which ultimately affects their ability to understand, think and be social. People with Down syndrome may also have other disorders such as heart defects, thyroid problems, intestinal problems, hearing and vision problems, various blood conditions such as leukemia, etc.

Previously Down syndrome could not be cured or treated, but thanks to recent advances in treatment and research, there have been cases where DS patient quality has improved.

Help a child with down syndrome

Give them an opportunity to mingle with other children.

Give easy instructions or say a few words

Encourage them to be as independent as possible from a young age such as brushing their teeth or going to the toilet.

With lots of love, help and support, many children and adults with DS can lead active and independent lives.
